DHAKA, Oct 7, 2018 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC)
today rejected a plea, filed by a convict in the case lodged over the 2012
murder of Saudi embassy official Khalaf Al Ali, to review his death sentence.

A four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud
Hossain passed the order, paving the way to execute Saiful Islam Mamun in the
case.

Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal on December 30, 2012, sentenced five persons
to death in the case. But after holding hearing on appeals and death
reference in the case, the High Court on November 18, 2013, upheld death
sentence of Mamun but commuted Md Al Amin, Akbar Ali Lalu and Rafikul Islam’s
maximum sentence to life imprisonment. It also acquitted Selim Chowdhury from
the charges.

The state in 2014 filed appeals against the High Court judgment. Saiful
Islam Mamun too filed an appeal, pleading to acquit him from the charges.

On November 1, 2017, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court too upheld
death of Mamun and life imprisonment for Al Amin, Akbar Ali Lalu and Rafikul
Islam.

Khalaf, 45, was shot on March 5, 2012, near his residence in Gulshan. He
later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital. Then a case was filed with the
Gulshan Police Station.
