7 left-wing rebels surrender in central India

NEW DELHI, Oct. 5, 2018 (BSS/XINHUA) – As many as seven left-wing Naxalite
rebels have surrendered in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, police
said Friday.

“The seven rebels, including a woman, gave up arms in the state’s Bijapur
district before the Inspector General of Police Vivekanand Sinha Thursday
evening. They will be rehabilitated as per government policy,” a police
official said.

Chhattisgarh is often hit by Naxalite violence.

The left-wing insurgency began in the eastern state of West Bengal in late
1960s, spreading to more than one-third of India’s administrative districts.

Though major offensives by security forces in recent years have pushed the
rebels back to their forest strongholds, but hit-and-run attacks are still
common, killing hundreds of people, mostly security personnel, every year.
