Empowering women through public procurement stressed

DHAKA, Oct 4, 2018 (BSS) – Speakers at a dialogue here today called for better policy support to enable women to actively participate in the government’s procurement process.

The speakers made the called at the dialogue, titled ‘Public Procurement Policy and Gender Perspective’ organized by Business Initiative Leading Development (BUILD) in cooperation with IFC-WBG and BWIT at Sonargaon Hotel in the city, said a press release.

The dialogue brought together stakeholders and experts for discussion and deftly explored the inclusion of gender aspect into the procurement laws of Bangladesh for identifying ways in which women can actively participate in the government’s procurement process.

Comptroller and Auditor General of Bangladesh Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury attended the programme as the chief guest while CPTU Director General Faruque Hossain and Bangladesh Economic Association General Secretary Dr Jamal Uddin Ahmed, among others, were present.

Like IT, Muslim Chowdhury, said a standard portal can also be launched for women to have enough information for increasing their capacities.

He suggested that services, including intellectual and professional, could be the preferred area for women. Referring to the successful example of electronic fund transfer (EFT), he said e-procurement and other related activities, such as certification, award giving and payment, will be synchronized with the total electronic payment system.

Jamal Uddin Ahmed suggested for better policy support so that enabling environment can be created for the women entrepreneurs.
