Winning start for Bangladesh in Bangabandhu International Gold Cup

SYLHET, Oct 1, 2018 (BSS)- Host Bangladesh got off to a winning start in
the 5th edition of Bangabandhu International Gold Cup beating Laos by 1-0
goal in their group B opening match held at Sylhet District Stadium in Sylhet
today.

After the barren first half, midfielder Bipul Ahmed finally broke the
deadlock scoring the important goal for Bangladesh in the 59th minute of the
match.

Bangladesh will play their second and final group match against
Philippine on October 5 at the same venue.

Earlier, Finance Minister AMA Muhith MP formally inaugurated the
prestigious tournament as the chief guest. Bangladesh Football Federation
(BFF) president Kazi Mohammad Salahuddin and Sylhet Deputy Commissioner
Numeri Jaman were, among others, present on the occasion.

To commemorate and respect the memory of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Bangabandhu International Gold Cup will take place
at two other venues – Bir Shreshtha Ruhul Amin Stadium in Cox’s Bazar and
country’s premier venue Bangabandhu National Stadium in the capital.

It was the fifth edition of the most coveted competition while this time
BFF is going to organise the tournament after one year interval as the fourth
edition was held in 2016.

Apart from host Bangladesh, Palestine, Philippines, Laos, Nepal and
Tajikistan are participating in the tournament.

Bangladesh has been drawn in Group B of the 6-nation tournament along
with Laos and Philippines while Nepal, Palestine and Tajikistan are in Group
A.

The two semifinals of the tournament are slated in Cox’s Bazar on October
9 and 10 and the final will take place at Bangabandhu National Stadium on
October 12.
