Four-months premature ‘miracle baby’ thriving 6 months later

LONDON, Sept. 30, 2018 (BSS/Xinhua) – A four-months premature baby in
Lancashire, Britain has defied the odds and is just about to turn a half-year
old, media reported recently.

The tiny baby named Elsie weighed just 1lb 10oz (about 0.73 kg) and
smaller than her mother’s palm when she was born earlier than expected in
April. Doctors said her chances of survival were slim.

“One minute she was delivered, the next she was taken away from us to the
neo-natal intensive care unit and placed on a ventilator,” her mother Kenya
Jade Latimer recalled.

“We were not even allowed to hold her because she was so fragile. Her skin
was so delicate. It was heart-breaking. You don’t know what to do or think
when something like this happens — you just have to deal with it,” she said.

Ms Latimer was rushed to hospital by partner Ashley on April 3 when she
experienced labor pains at just 24 weeks of her pregnancy.

After she was born, Elsie was monitored 24 hours a day, given special care
and underwent laser eye surgery to treat retinopathy of prematurity. She was
discharged home on Aug. 5, about four months after her early entrance.

Now Elsie is almost six months old and enjoying life like other babies.

“Elsie is a beautiful little baby — our little bundle of joy. She has
settled at home really well. She is gaining weight and is teething,” said Ms
Latimer. “Elsie is our little miracle and we love her to bits.”
