Bringing all street dogs under vaccination stressed

RANGPUR, Sept 29, 2018 (BSS) – Experts at a post-rally discussion today
stressed on bringing all streets dogs under vaccination programme and
creating public awareness on rabies infection to prevent occurrence of
hydrophobia.

They opined this at a discussion organised by Fulbari upazila health
administration at the conference room of Fulbari Upazila Health Complex
(FUHC) in Fulbari upazila of Dinajpur in observance of the World Rabies Day-
2018.

The Zoonotic Disease Control Programme of Centre for Disease Control and
Prevention under Directorate of Health extended assistance to Fulbari upazila
health administration in observing the day.

Earlier, a rally with participation of physicians, nurses and health
workers of FUHC and upazila level government officials, employees and civil
society members was brought out on the local streets.

Residential Medical Officer of FUHC Dr Sanjoy Kumar Gupta attended the
discussion as chief guest with Fulbari Upazila Health and Family Planning
Officer Dr Nurul Islam in the chair.

Government officials, public representatives and local journalists also
spoke.

Dr Islam identified lack of public awareness, basic information,
coordination and constraint of logistics as major challenges toward
preventing rabies infection that leads to hydrophobia disease.

“The government is implementing the ‘Rabies Elimination Strategy’ through
massive interventions, including vaccination of streets dogs, to eliminate
rabies infection by 2020 from the country,” he said.

The chief guest stressed on making the mass dog vaccination campaign a
success to control rabies infection in the present context for facing the
existing challenges collectively.

Side by side with distribution of vaccine and conducting training of
physicians and nurses, dog vaccination could effectively reduce the number of
street dogs with reproductive capability to break the cycle of rabies
transmission, he said.

He called for accelerating advocacy, communication and social mobilisation,
mass dog vaccination, management of dog bite and dog population and proper
functioning of dog bite management centres to build a hydrophobia-free
society.
