Malaysia willing to cooperate with China in digital economy, Malaysian
official

BEIJING, Sept. 29, 2018 (BSS/Xinhua) – Malaysia is willing to deepen the
collaboration with China in digital economy, according to Hew Wee Choong,
vice president of Investment & Industry Development of Malaysia Digital
Economy Corporation (MDEC) in a recent interview with Xinhua.

Hew believed that there will be a lot of opportunities for digital economy
cooperation between Malaysia and China, since China’s technology know-how and
Malaysia’s familiarity with the business strategy and model can make a potent
combination to penetrate ASEAN market.

According to him, Malaysia has a strategic location in ASEAN, which
delivers immense connectivity with emerging markets in Asia, making it a
perfect regional location to grow business strategically within the region.
In addition, Malaysia flourishes with talents who can speak various
languages, thanks to its multicultural backgrounds.

In that sense, with unique strengths in understanding the flavor of doing
business in ASEAN, Malaysia is an ideal springboard for the Chinese companies
looking to expand into ASEAN markets.

Speaking of Chinese investment in Malaysia, Hew said that the number of
Chinese companies coming into Malaysia was on the rise.

For example, Alibaba invested in Malaysia for Digital Free Trade Zones and
other initiatives, and China Soft also set up their operation in Malaysia,
said Hew.

He mentioned that the affinity between Chinese and Malaysian cultures
makes it easy for Chinese companies to integrate into Malaysian society. He
also advised the Chinese companies coming to Malaysia to get familiar with
legal practices in the nation state, which is also important when doing
business with other ASEAN countries.
