Sacks method farming brings solvency for Bhabodah farmers

KHULNA, Sept 28, 2018(BSS) – Farmers of Bhabodah area in Jessore-
Satkhira districts who usually face water logging throughout the year have
managed to repay their loan through sacks method vegetables cultivation.

Farmers of Monirampur and Keshobpur upazila of Jessore and Tala upazila
of Satkhira have become solvent by cultivating different vegetables and
saplings on their water-logged land with this method of farming.

While visiting Monirampur upazila on Tuesday this correspondent found
that many farmers were cultivating bitter gourd, papya, cauliflower, ladies
finger, pumpkin, onion, garlic, green chilli, brinjal and many other
vegetables through sacks method.

Ali Akbor said, “I earned profit of around Taka one lakh last year by
cultivating vegetables through sacks method on my 35 decimals of land.”

Sack farming involves filling a series of bags with soil, manure, and
pebbles for drainage, and growing plants on the top and in holes in the
sides. The sacks allow people to grow food in places with limited access to
arable land and water, he said.

“If this farming method gets government help, it may be extended to
Bhabodah and other water logging area in the country’s Jessore-Satkhira
part,” he added.

When visiting Khakundi village under Monohorpur union of the upazila this
reporter witnessed that farmer Abu Sayeed was farming vegetables in 150
sacks.

Many landless farmers become self-reliant through this cultivation
method, said deputy director of Khulna Department of Agriculture Extension
(DAE) Abdul Latif.

He said many farmers are taking training on sacks method vegetable
cultivation from Agriculture Office for farming vegetables and crops on water
logging Bhabodah area.

The field level agriculture officials said as these vegetables are
chemical free, these have great demand in different districts of the country.
