Call to make market committees effective

RAJSHAHI, Sept 28, 2018 (BSS)- Experts and development activists at a
participatory discussion here have observed that making all the existing
market committees proper functional can be the vital means of ensuring food
safety leading to freeing the public health from various chronic diseases.

They viewed that marketing of adulterated and unhygienic food is now being
adjudged as the reason for many deadly diseases. So, collective efforts of
the concerned quarters including the public and private entities and market
committees have become an urgent need to attain the cherished goal of
resisting marketing of adulterated foods.

The observation came at a workshop titled “Engagement with bazar committee
role to ensure food safety” in Barnoi conference hall of Paba Upazila
Parishad in Rajshahi on Thursday.

Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) and Issue-based Project on Food
Safety Governance in Poultry Sector jointly organised the workshop in
association with UKaid and British Council.

Chaired by CAB district unit general secretary Golam Mostofa Mamun, the
meeting was addressed, among others by, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jahid Newaj,
District Livestock Officer Dr Zulfikar Akhter Hossain, Upazila Livestock
Officer Dr Khandaker Sagar Ahmed, CAB Project Officer Mijanur Rahman and
Assistant Director of BADC Mimi Talukder.

CAB project field coordinator Amor D Costa and field officer Mohidul Hassan
also spoke.

The discussants opined that proper enforcement of Consumers’ Rights
Protection Act could be the vital means of protecting the consumers’ rights
together with freeing the human body from any food poisoning and other
contamination.

Golam Mostofa Mamun mentioned that the consumers’ rights in the developed
nations focus on the right to information, choice, redress and
representation, but we are deprived of such privileges.

Unsafe food has been adjudged as a major threat to public health in
Bangladesh, so emphasis should be given to adopting effective measures in
this regard, he added.
