Attaining self-reliance of NGOs for social development underscored

RAJSHAHI, Sept 21, 2018 (BSS) – Professional leaders and experts here stressed the need for attaining self-reliance of the country’s non government organizations (NGOs) through their capacity building instead of depending on financial support from the donor agencies.

They mentioned that various reasons are contributing to gradual decreasing of existing financial support to NGOs from donor agencies. So, time has come for NGOs to obtain self-sufficiency after the best uses of local resources for overall development of the country.

They came up with the observation while addressing a daylong workshop titled “Self Esteem CSO-NGO Sector: Campaign on Grand Bargain and Localization” at Moonlight Garden Convention Hall in the city on Thursday.

Coastal Association for Social Transformation Trust (COAST) and Rajshahi Divisional Convening Committee jointly organized the workshop in association with Oxfam.

More than 100 people comprising development activists, members of the civil society, professional leaders and journalists joined it.

General Secretary of Workers Party of Bangladesh Fazley Hossain Badsha, MP, addressed the function as the chief guest with Divisional Coordinator of the committee Foyzullah Chowdhury in the chair.

Executive Director of COAST Rejaul Karim Chowdhury, delegation of Forum of NGO Bangladesh Jahedul Islam, Director of Association of Development Agencies in Bangladesh Jasim Uddin, Oxfam Officer Suman Das and local unit president of Bangladesh Mohila Parishad Kolpona Roy also spoke.

In his speech, lawmaker Badsha urged the NGO people to enhance their capacity to lessen dependence on foreign aid and fund.

He praised the role of NGOs in socio-economic development of the region and said the major tasks of those are to uphold the rights of people, especially that of women.

He also urged the NGOs to work with more accountability and transparency for a balanced development of the country.
