Take holistic approach to rehabilitate human trafficking victims: experts

RAJSHAHI, Sept 20, 2018 (BSS) – Experts here today urged the government to
take a holistic approach involving government and non-government
organisations to rehabilitate human trafficking victims.

They came up with the call at a review meeting on district level
directory at Hotel Warishan in the city.

Sachetan Rajshahi, a rights organisation, arranged the meeting in
association with Bangladesh Counter Trafficking in Persons Programme. USAID
and Winrock International jointly supported the meeting.

Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi SM Abdul Kader addressed the meeting as the
chief guest with Executive Director of Sachetan Rajshahi Hasinul Islam in the
chair.

District Legal Executive Magistrates Zishan Bin Mazed, Sukanta Shaha and
Iqbal Hassan, Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat and Project
Coordinator of Sachetan Rajshahi Mahmud-Un-Nabi also spoke at the meeting.

The speakers observed that the victims of human trafficking need
integrated support to lessen their plights and vulnerabilities with proper
rehabilitation in society.

Abdul Kader stressed the need for collective efforts of all government and
non-government organisations concerned for proper rehabilitation of the human
trafficking victims.

He said the human trafficking victims are subjected to repression and
oppression by their surrounding people and that is why there should be
effective and time-befitting measures for ensuring their access to family and
social integration.

Kader informed the meeting that the ‘Rajshahi district human trafficking
survivor service directory’ has already been uploaded in district
administration website that will act as a district level effective referral
process relating to traffic victim services.

Taking part in group discussions, the participants put forward a set of
recommendations on how to make the service-oriented activities appropriate to
ease the plights of human trafficking victims.
