OMS rice smugglers will face harsh action: Quamrul

DHAKA, Sept 15, 2018 (BSS)- The government would take stern legal action against those involved in smuggling of OMS rice and flour, said food minister Quamrul Islam.

“A high level probe committee has been formed to identify the smugglers. We will take departmental action based on this committee’s report. A case has also been filed with Anti Corruption Commission (ACC),” he told BSS.

The government formed a 3-member probe committee headed by Director of Supply, Distribution and Marketing Parimal Chandra Das on September 6. Other two members of the committee are Chief Controller (Rationing) Tapan Chandra Roy and Regional Food Controller, Dhaka Jamal Hossain. The committee will submit report on September 17.

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) seized 215 tonnes of subsidised rice, flour and wheat meant for lower income people from a government warehouse and a kitchen market in the capital recently.

Rab-3 team led by Executive Magistrate Sarwoer Alam seized eight trucks carrying OMS rice and flour when they were just heading for Gazipur, Chuadanga and Sreemangal from the Tejgaon Central Storage Depot (CSD).

The same team seized another 100 tonnes of rice and flour from eleven private warehouses in Mohammadpur Krishi Market. The items ended up there from the Tejgaon CSD.

Manager of the government silo Humayun Kabir and another person were arrested in this connection.
