Rangpur turns festive as PM to inaugurate RMP tomorrow

RANGPUR, Sept 15, 2018 (BSS) – A festive mood is prevailing here as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the newly established Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RMP) through videoconferencing from the Ganabhaban in the capital tomorrow.

The local people are eagerly waiting with huge excitement to witness the fulfillment of another pledge of the Prime Minister after getting Rangpur administrative division, city corporation and other massive development activities as per her commitments in past 10 years.

Talking to BSS today, newly appointed MRP Commissioner Md Abdul Alim Mahmud said all necessary preparations were completed for the videoconferencing of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Rangpur end at 10 am tomorrow (Sunday).

On the occasion, RMP will arrange a colourful function at Rangpur Metropolitan Police Lines ground located on the Gangachara Road with participation of government officials, political leaders, civil society members and the elite of the city.

“After inaugural of RMP by the Prime Minister through the videoconferencing, a huge colourful ‘Ananda Shobhayatra’ will be brought out on the city streets from Rangpur Police Lines ground at 11:30 am,” Alim said.

Thousands of common people, political leaders and activists, students, teachers, socio-cultural and professional activists, civil society members and the local elite will take part in the ‘Ananda Shobhayatra’ that will return again to Rangpur Police Lines ground.

“Later, a colourful cultural function will be held there followed by playing of firecrackers to end the function at night,” the RMP commissioner said.

Meanwhile, the RMP commissioner at a press conference said the government published a gazette notification on December 10, 2017, creating 1,185 posts for formation of RMP as per the commitment made by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her visit to Rangpur on January 8, 2011.

“On April 12 this year, the Jatiya Sangsad passed the Rangpur Metropolitan Police Bill, 2018 and a gazette notification was published subsequently on April 19 in this connection,” he said.

He said the RMP is constituted with 239.72 square kilometres of land area and six thanas (police stations) — Kotwali, Porshuram, Hajirhat, Haragachh, Tazhat and Mahiganj — and several police outposts.

Kotwali Thana with its headquarters at Mulatol area in the city is constituted with 16 wards (ward nos-13 to 28) of the city as its operational jurisdiction.

Porshuram Thana is constituted with four wards (ward nos-3 to 6), Hajirhat Thana with five wards (ward nos- 1, 2, 10, 11 and 12) and Haragachh Thana with three wards (ward nos- 7, 8 and 8), Haragachh municipality and Sarai union of Kawnia upazila.

Tazhat Thana is constituted with five wards (ward Nos-15, 28, 29, 31 and 32) while Mahiganj Thana with three wards (ward nos- 29, 30 and 33) of the city and Kallyani union of Pirgachha upazila, the RMP commissioner said.

A total of 470 police personnel, including one Police Commissioner, two Additional Police Commissioners, two Deputy Police Commissioners and one Additional Deputy Police Commissioner have joined RMP and 295 others are to join their respective posts.

“I firmly believe that RMP will be able to earn confidence of the people of Rangpur city by upholding its professional reputation in line with spirit of the Great War of Liberation to ensure peaceful law and order situation,” the RMP commissioner said.
