2 militants killed in Indian-controlled Kashmir gunfight

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Sept 11, 2018 (BSS/Xinhua) – Two
militants were killed Tuesday in a fierce gunfight with government forces in
restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted at village Galoora of Langate in frontier Kupwara
district, about 80 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of
Indian-controlled Kashmir.

“Two militants were killed in an overnight gunfight with joint contingents
of army and police in Langate area of Handwara early today,” an Indian army
spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said.

Indian army or police, according to officials, have not suffered any
damage in the stand-off.

Police officials said two bodies have been recovered from the site and
they were identified as local cadres of Lashkar-e-Toiba militant outfit.

Authorities have suspended mobile internet services in Kupwara as a
precautionary measure fearing it would intensify protests. The local
administration has also announced closure of educational institutions in
Handwara.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed
in the region since 1989.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is
claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two
countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
