Hearing of Khaleda’s graft case adjourned for defence’s absence

DHAKA, Sept 5, 2018 (BSS) – A Dhaka court today compelled to adjourn
hearing of Zia Charitable Trust graft case against BNP chairperson Begum
Khaleda Zia and three others as the defence counsels failed to turn up before
the court.

Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman of Dhaka-5 Special Judges’ Court adjourned the
hearing till September 12, 13.

The BNP chief was produced before the court, raised inside the
administrative building of the old Central Jail, where Khaleda Zia has been
kept after being convicted in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on February 8.

Khaleda Zia and three other accused were produced before the court but
their counsels were nowhere to be seen.

But all the state counsels, including ACC counsel Mosharraf Hossain Kazal
and public prosecutor Abdullah Abu were present at the courtroom.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case with capital’s Tejgaon
Police Station on August 8, 2010, for embezzling Taka 3.15 crore. Police on
January 16, 2012, filed charge sheet against four including the BNP chief.

The other accused are Khaleda’s former political secretary Haris
Chowdhury, BIWTA director Ziaul Islam Munna and Monirul Islam Khan, former
personal secretary of former Dhaka city mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka.

Court framed charges against Khaleda and others in the case on March 19,
2014.
