Taka 17.82 lakh crore dev projects get ECNEC approval in 10 years

DHAKA, Sep 5, 2018 (BSS) – The economy of Bangladesh has got sustainable dynamism as the government approved some 2,135 developed projects worth Taka 17,82,904 crore over the last 10 years.

By taking these projects, the Awami League government has attained cent percent capacity to implement any big development project.

According to a recent report of the Ministry of Planning on the success of the last 10 years, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved these 2,135 projects from the FY09 to FY18.

Of the total projects, around 57 percent of the overall expenditure amounting to Taka 10,22,906 crore was given approval against various development projects in the last three fiscal years.

After assuming office through a landslide victory in the 2008 general election, the AL-led grand alliance government held its first ECNEC meeting on January 13 in FY09 while the last ECNEC meeting in FY18 was held on June 26.

The report said the AL government after assuming office for the second successive term in 2014 has so far held some 140 ECNEC meetings and gave approval to some 1,172 projects involving an overall estimated cost of Taka 13,66,537 crore. Out of this overall amount, Taka 8,08,440 crore is coming from the government fund, Taka 37,710 crore from the organization’s own fund while the rest Taka 5,20,386 crore from project assistance.

The AL-led grand alliance government in its first term gave approval to projects worth Taka 4,49,830 crore.

The report said the present government has always given priority to the development of all communities alongside changing the fates of the marginal people and the lagging behind areas before undertaking any project to keep up the growth momentum.

“The goal of the Ministry of Planning for undertaking development projects is to ensure socio-economic development alongside alleviating poverty and reducing income disparity. The ministry is working tirelessly to materialize the dream that the Prime Minister has seen in the eyes of the common people,” the report said.

For this, implementation of the 7th Five Year Plan is going on based on the successes and socioeconomic development attained in the 6th Five Year Plan period. The 7th Five Year Plan also incorporated the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The development projects are being undertaken to turn Bangladesh into a mid-income country by 2021 and a developed country by 2041.

Analyzing the report, it was found that the AL government in FY09 gave approval to some 69 projects worth Taka 13,783 crore, followed by 225 projects in FY10 worth Taka 80,469 crore, 250 projects in FY11 worth Taka 1,12,126 crore, 168 projects in FY12 worth Taka 1,61,260 crore and 151 projects in FY13 worth Taka 1,06,406 crore.

Over the last five fiscal years, 212 projects were approved in FY14 worth Taka 1,21,962 crore followed by 212 projects in FY15 worth Taka 1,63,992 crore, 278 projects in FY16 worth Taka 2,71,949 crore, 252 projects in FY17 worth Taka 3,84,528 crore and 318 projects in FY18 worth Taka 3,66,429 crore.

Besides, implementation of the government’s highest priority ‘Fast Track’ projects are going on smoothly as the Economic Relations Division (ERD) is monitoring their progress every month and sending the progress reports to the Prime Minister’s Office.
