Community-based preparedness to reduce disaster risks stressed

RANGPUR, Sept 01, 2018 (BSS) – Experts at a training programme here have
laid emphasis on adoption of community-based early preparedness to reduce
risks of natural disasters like floods in natural calamity-prone areas.

They came up with the view at the daylong programme on ‘ Disaster
Management Affairs Training’ that ended at Nageswari Upazila Parishad
auditorium in Kurigram district on Friday afternoon.

The Department of Disaster Management of the Ministry of Disaster
Management and Relief organised the training programme moderated by Nageswari
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sankar Kumar Biswas.

A total of 420 participants, including chairmen and secretaries of all 15
unions and members of Union Disaster Management Committees (UDMCs) of the
upazila participated in the programme.

Additional secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief and
Director (Research and Training) of the Department of Disaster Management
Harun Ar Rashid, its Joint Secretary Sultana Sayeeda, Director Anisur Rahman
and Deputy Director (Training) Nurunnahar Chowdhury delivered presentations
as resource persons.

Nageswari Upazila Parishad Chairman Abul Kashem, Upazila Project
Implementation Officer Md Sirajuddowla, participating union chairmen,
presidents and secretaries of the UDMCs took part in open discussions.

The resource persons narrated natural disasters like earthquake, cyclones,
tsunami, droughts, floods, erosions, heavy rains and droughts and elaborated
the statistics with loses of human lives and properties, way-outs and means
for reducing disaster risks.

They put emphasis on creating awareness, early preparedness and efficient
emergency response management systems at community levels through effective
dissemination of information to minimise damages during natural disasters
like floods.
