11 killed after vehicle plunges into river in Indian-controlled Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Aug 21, 2018 (BSS/Xinhua) – At least
11 people were killed and one injured Tuesday after a vehicle carrying them
skidded off a mountainous road and plunged into a river in Indian-controlled
Kashmir, police said.

The accident took place near Noos Padyarna in Kishtwar district, 255 km
south of Srinagar the capital city of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

“In a tragic road accident here today a vehicle carrying 12 passengers
skidded off the road and fell into river Chenab near Noos Padyarna,” Angrez
Singh Rana, deputy commissioner Kishtwar told Xinhua via telephone.

“We have retrieved 11 bodies and rescued one five-year-old child in
injured condition.”

According to Rana, the injured child (lone survivor) was immediately
removed to hospital.

“Of the 11 dead five were women and six men,” he said. “They were Hindu
pilgrims on way to Machail Mata shrine.”

On Monday seven people were killed in the district after landslide hit
their vehicle.

“Yesterday also seven pilgrims were killed after their vehicle came under
a landslide,” a police official said.

“Five people were killed on spot and eight others injured in the accident.
However, later on two more injured succumbed taking death toll to seven.”

Deadly road accidents are common in the region often caused due to
overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
