a2i, USAID launch 6 digital centres in Gazipur, Khulna

DHAKA, Aug 16, 2018, (BSS) – Access to Information (a2i) in
collaboration with USAID launched six digital centres in Gazipur and Khulna
for providing easy and quick services to the garment and fisheries industries
workers at minimum cost.

Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur Dr Dewan Muhammad Humayun Kabir
inaugurated a digital centre today at WCC under Uttor Dattopara at Tongi as
part as of launching the operations of these six digital centres.

Out of these six centres, fives are located at the RMG-industry prone
areas of Tongi, Konabari, Boardbazar, Kashimpur and Vogra under Gazipur
district while the another digital centre has been set up at Rupsha under
Khulna district.

These five centres in Gazipur district will provide services to the
garment workers while the another centre in Khulna will serve to the people
who are related to fisheries industries.

The beneficiaries of these services will be able to buy and sell over
five lakh products through rural e-commerce ‘ekshop’ side by side enjoying
financial inclusion service and agent banking.

An individual entrepreneur in every centre will provide the services and
these entrepreneurs have already been imparted training by the a2i about the
services. The digital service centres will remain open every day from 7:00 am
to 10:00 pm.

Speaking through video conference from Dhaka, Anir Chaudhury, Policy
Adviser of a2i, highlighted different aspects of these digital centres.

Solidarity Centre Christopher Johnson were present on the occasion.

Digital centres are being established across the country as part of the
government’s initiatives to materialize the Vision 2021. The Union
Information and Service Centre commonly known as digital center was first
launched at Chor Kukri Mukri on November 11, 2010 through video conferencing
by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Global administrator of UNDP Helen Clark,
who is also the former prime minister of New Zealand.
