National Mourning Day observed in Gaibandha with due honor

GAIBANDHA, AUG 16, 2018 (BSS) – National Mourning Day and the 43rd
martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation and Architect of Sovereign
Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheik Mujibur Rahman observed here yesterday with due
respect and honor.

Marking the day, district administration chalked out the elaborate
programmes that include hoisting of national flag at half mast, placing
floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, bringing
out mourning procession and distribution of cheques to the trained youths and
the organizations.

The programmes also included art competition for the children organized
by Zila Shishu Academy (ZSA), prize distribution to the winners, rendering
songs, reciting poems, milad mahfil, special prayers in the mosque, temple
and churches and other religious organizations, holding blood donation
programme and health camp by health department, and film display at important
places by the district information office.

Besides, a discussion meeting on life of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur
Rahman organized by district administration was also held at the auditorium
of District Shilpakala Academy with deputy commissioner Gautam Chandra Pal in
the chair.

Whip of the Jatiya Sangshad and local lawmaker Mahabub Ara Begum Gini
addressed the function as the chief discussant.

Superintendent of police Engineer Abdul Mannan Miah, civil surgeon Dr. Abdus
Shakur, president of Awami League district unit Advocate Syed Shams-ul-Alam
Hiru, acting general secretary freedom fighter Mojammel Haque Mondal, and
mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Advocate Shah Masud Jahangir Kabir Milon also
spoke at the discussion.

The speakers said the August 15, 1975 is regarded as a shameful chapter
in the history of Bengali nation as on this day the undisputed leader Sheikh
Mujibur Rahman along with his family members were brutally assassinated at
his own residence by a group of disgruntled army officers. Bangabandhu’s two
daughters Sheikh Hasina (now Prime Minister) and Sheikh Rehena survived as
they were abroad at that time.

Whip Mahabub Ara Begum Gini said the memory of Bangabandhu is alive not only
in the month of August, but also in every moment in our life and he would
remain in people’s heart forever as the best son of the soil for thousands of
years.

The whip sought blessing of Almighty Allah for peace of the departed
souls of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and other family members and
relatives who were assassinated on the fateful night of August 15 in 1975.

Later, she distributed prizes to the winners who participated in the art
and poem reciting competition.

All district and upazila level officials, political leaders of district
AL and its associate organizations, public representatives, social workers
and members of civil society and media attended the meeting.

Apart from it, the AL, district unit and its associate organizations
also observed the day amid different programmes.
