Mongolian ex-president likely to compete for parliamentary by-election

ULAN BATOR, Aug 10, 2018 (BSS/XINHUA) – Mongolia’s former president Nambar
Enkhbayar is likely to compete for the country’s parliament by-election, a
source told Xinhua on Friday.

Enkhbayar’s Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party (MPRP) has received a
confirmation certificate to participate in by-election of the 42nd
constituency of parliamentary election in the eastern Khentii Province.

“The MPRP’s chairman Enkhbayar is likely to compete (for) the upcoming by-
election. But our party will make its final decision by Sep. 4 in accordance
with the election rules,” Buya Tulga, secretary of the MPRP, told Xinhua over
the phone.

The Mongolian parliament has decided to hold a parliamentary by-election
to fill a vacant seat on Oct. 7 after parliament member Dorjdugar Gantulga
stepped down amid what he called a “politically motivated” rape allegation.

Enkhbayar was banned to stand for the presidential elections in 2017
because of registration irregularities and his conviction for graft in 2012.

He served as a prime minister of Mongolia from 2000 to 2004, as a speaker
of the parliament from 2004 to 2005, and as the president of Mongolia from
2005 to 2009.
