Bangabandhu enacted sea law before UN convention: Muhith

DHAKA, August 8, 2018 (BSS) – Finance Minister AMA Muhith today said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had enacted the ‘Territorial Waters and Maritime Zones Act 1974’ much before the declaration of the Law of the Sea Convention by the UN in the early eighties.

“Bangabandhu was a visionary leader. He enacted the sea law. We have further developed the law, but it was Bangabandhu who had initiated the law for the next generation,” he said, speaking as the chief guest at a discussion on the “National Mourning Day-2018” at the Finance Ministry in the city.

Officials and Employees Welfare Society of the Finance Division and Financial Institutions Division organised the discussion.

Among others, State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan, Senior Secretary of the Financial Institution Division M Eunusur Rahman and Secretary-in-Charge of the Finance Division Abdur Rouf Talukder spoke on this occasion.

Muhith said Bangabandhu took different initiatives to build the country after the Liberation War.

“Bangabandhu was a great man. He had no personal anger against anyone. He was kind to all. We still follow the rules, which he made,” he added.
