Chittagong Port to buy four gantry cranes from China

DHAKA, August 8, 2018 (BSS)-Chittagong Port will soon get four Quay Gantry Cranes from China at a cost of Taka 238.61 crore.

Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority Commodore Zulfikar Aziz and senior vice president of Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company Limited (SZHICL) Liu Qizhong signed a contract on behalf of their respective organisations at the shipping minister here today.

Shipping minister Shajahan Khan and shipping secretary Md Abdus Samad were present at the contract signing ceremony, said a release.

The capacity of each of the cranes is 40 tonnes. The cranes will be used at New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT). Earlier, the government also signed a contract with SZHICL to procure six quay gantry cranes for Chittagong Port from China at a cost of Taka 345 crore.

These six cranes are expected to be delivered by SZHICL next month. As the each crane can handle 25 to 32 containers per hour, installation of these cranes will help to cut turn-around time of ships at the port.

Following the installation of the cranes, it would be possible to handle containers from five gearless ships at a time. It would also help boost the productivity of ships and reduce the average rates of their anchorage periods.
