DHAKA, August 7, 2018 (BSS) – The National Energy Security Day-2018 will
be observed across the country on August 9 (Thursday), commemorating the
historic decision taken by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur
Rahman on August 9, 1975.

After the country’s independence, Bangabandhu had undertaken various
initiatives to develop the country’s energy sector and bought five gas fields
from the then British oil company ‘Shell Oil’ for the state at a nominal
price, a ministry official told BSS.

Mentioning that the government has been observing the day since 2010, he
said State for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid will brief
journalists tomorrow (Wednesday) on the occasion of the National Energy
Security Day.

The official said the present government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina, has undertaken various initiatives to ensure the country’s energy
security.

As part of the initiatives, the government has discovered gas fields at
Sadullapur, Srikail and Roopganj. Besides, the Bibiyana gas field has been
expanded and gas is being supplied through Bibiyana-Dhanua gas pipeline.

Earlier, Nasrul said the government would ensure energy security by
supplying primary energy continuously.

He said the government signed agreements with Rasgas of Qatar, Oman
Trading International of Oman, Pertamina of Indonesia and Astra Oil Trading
of Switzerland for purchasing Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to meet the
country’s energy demand.
