World champion Mayer sees Euro decathlon hope disappear
BERLIN, Aug 7, 2018 (BSS/AFP) – World decathlon champion Kevin Mayer of
France saw his hopes of snatching the European title disappear Tuesday after
failing to register a mark in the long jump.
The in-form Olympic silver medallist had opened up with a lifetime best of
10.64 seconds in the 100m, the fastest of the field.
But come the second test of the two-day, 10-discipline event, and the 26-
year-old Mayer could only record three fouls in the long jump, effectively
ruling himself out of a tilt for gold and blowing the field open in the race
for the podium.
