Sheikh Kamal’s 69th birth anniversary tomorrow

DHAKA, Aug 4, 2018 (BSS) – The 69th birth anniversary of Sheikh Kamal, the
eldest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, will be
observed tomorrow.

Born on August 5, 1949 at Tungipara in Gopalganj, Sheikh Kamal was a
former executive member of the central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League
(BCL).

Awami League, its associate bodies and different political, socio-cultural
and sports organizations have taken up elaborate programmes marking the day.

The programmes include placing of wreaths at the portrait of Sheikh Kamal
and recitation from the Holy Quran, milad-mahfil and offering fateha at
Banani Graveyard and discussions.

The AL and its associate bodies will pay tribute to Sheikh Kamal by
placing wreaths at his portrait on Dhanmondi Abahani Club premises at 8am and
at his grave in the Banani Graveyard at 9am.

A doa mahfil will be held at the graveyard seeking eternal peace of the
departed soul of Sheikh Kamal and other family members of Father of the
Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who were assassinated by a group of
disgruntled army personnel on August 15, 1975.

Besides, Awami Swechchhasebak League will pay homage to Sheikh Kamal’s
portrait at Abahani Krira Chakra at 9.30am and it will place a wreath at his
grave in the Banani Graveyard at 10.30pm. Besides, the organization will
arrange a discussion marking the day.

Abahani Supporters Gosthi is scheduled to place wreaths at the portrait of
the club’s founder Sheikh Kamal on Abahani Club premises at one minute past
midnight tonight.

Sheikh Kamal was well-trained on war-course and he got commission before
taking part in Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.

He was the Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to Commander-in-Chief of Bangladesh Armed
Forces General Ataul Gani Osmani during the War of Liberation.

After passing Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination from Shahin
School and HSC from Dhaka College, Kamal was admitted into Dhaka University.

Sheikh Kamal embraced martyrdom on August 15 in 1975 at the age of 26.

He was one of the pioneers of modern football in Bangladesh and also
founder-president of the country’s leading sporting club Abahani Krira
Chakra.

Kamal used to play cricket in first division for Azad Boys Club and
Basketball too in first division for Spurs Club. He was also founder-member
of Dhaka Theatre and Spondon Shilpa Gosthi, a musical band of folk songs.
