RAJSHAHI, July 30, 2018 (BSS)- Proper enforcement of Consumers’ Rights
Protection Act could be the vital means of protecting the consumers’ rights
together with freeing the human body from any food poisoning and other
contamination.

The issue of the consumers’ rights is well accepted throughout the world
and in the free market economy. So, there is an urgent need of bringing all
the businessmen and others concerned under the awareness programme in this
regard.

The observation came at a consultation with upazila level consumers and
civil society bodies. Consumers Association of Bangladesh and Issue-based
Project on Food Safety Governance in Poultry Sector jointly organised the
consultation at Nawhata Municipality conference underPaba upazila in Rajshahi
on Sunday.

Chaired by CAB local unit president Kazi Nazmul Islam, the meeting was
addressed, among others, by committee advisers Ashraf Ali Dewan, Freedom
Fighter SM Kamruzzaman and Jahidur Rahman, Vice-presidents Hasinur Rahman and
Rahima Khatun, general secretary Wazed Ali and organizing secretary Sohel
Mahbub and CAB field coordinator Amor D Costa and field officer Mohidul
Hassan.

The speakers said consumer protection, in the broader sense, refers to the
laws and regulations that ensure fair interaction between service providers
and consumers.

Kazi Nazmul Islam mentioned that the consumers’ rights in the developed
nations focus on the right to information, choice, redress and
representation, but we are deprived of such privileges.

Unsafe food has been adjudged as a major threat to public health in
Bangladesh, so emphasis should be given to adopting effective measures in
this regard, he added.
