DHAKA, July 26, 2018 (BSS)-Parliamentary Standing Committee on Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology has finalized the Digital Security Act-2018 which is likely to be passed in the next session of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS), said Telecom and ICT Minister Mustafa Jabbar.

“The act has been finalized in the standing committee. There will be no existence of section 57 when the act will be passed in the Jatiya Sangsad,” said Posts, Telecommunications and Information and Technology Minister Mustafa Jabbar while talking to journalists after joining DCs Conference here today.

Cabinet Secretary Shafiul Alam presided over the second session of the closing-day of the three-day conference of Deputy Commissioners (DCs).

Jabbar said when the act will be passed in the JS police will not be able to take any step against anyone directly. There will be a Director General (DG) of the digital security organization and case can be filed with the DG’s permission only, he added.

He said everybody should remember that the impact of digital crime is more serious than that of general crime. So, the digital crimes will have to be controlled within a technical legal system, he added.

“Our aim is not to snatch freedom of expression . . . we want to stop digital and cyber crimes,” said the minister. Janbbar said the ongoing cases under section 57 will be settled under the existing legal process.

Replying to a question, he said as per the government’s plan digitization will be expanded up to union-village level. So, cooperation of DCs is important for implementation of the government digital programmes, he said.

“I have sought cooperation from DCs because they are in crucial position as they have to work with people from all level,” he said.
