Three minor sisters die of starvation in New Delhi

NEW DELHI, July 26, 2018 (BSS/Xinhua) – Three minor sisters, aged eight,
four and two years old, died due to starvation in Indian capital New Delhi,
local police confirmed on Wednesday.

According to the police, the dead kids’ mother was mentally unstable and
their father missing from their home. The family reportedly lived in a slum
in east Delhi’s Mandawali.

The dead children were discovered by the family’s landlord after which
they were taken to a nearby hospital. Autopsy confirmed that the girls died
of starvation.

“A second opinion from the medical board, which conducted another autopsy,
is still awaited. No police case has been registered so far. The bodies of
the children were handed over to the mother today (Wednesday),” said deputy
commissioner of police Pankaj Kumar Singh.

Meanwhile, the doctors who conducted the post-mortem and autopsy said the
three children had died of starvation resulting from prolonged malnutrition.

“The primary cause of death was definitely starvation; the children might
have had infections or diarrhea but the underlying cause is severe
malnutrition,” one of the doctors was quoted as saying.

“The condition of the organs, according to the post-mortem report, showed
that there was prolonged malnutrition.”
