DUTA demands for taking legal action against DU Prof Akmal

DHAKA, July 25, 2018 (BSS) – Dhaka University Teachers’ Association (DUTA)
here today demanded to take legal action against a former DU professor for
making “indecent comments” about Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh
Mujibur Rahman and the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The teachers came up with the demand from a human chain held at Arts
Building premises of the campus. They also urged the teacher to seek apology
to the nation for his remarks.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of ruling Awami
League, gave a memorandum to the DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Md
Akhtaruzzaman at the latter’s office demanding taking legal and
administrative action against the retired prof Akmal Hossain.

BCL general secretary read out the memorandum and urged to take action
against those who are trying to destabilize the university campus.

Prof Akmal Hossain, a retired teacher of the International Relations
Department, at a teachers’ solidarity rally under the banner of ‘Teachers
against Repression’ on July 19, allegedly delivered “indecent remarks” about
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina’s participation in the
Liberation War.

While addressing at the human chain, DUTA president Prof ASM Maksud Kamal
said Prof Akmal Hossain insulted Bangabandhu and the Premier and humiliated
our War of Liberation.

“Our teachers’ association will scrutinize what Prof Akmal taught in his
37-year teaching career. We urge him to seek unconditional apology. We also
demand that DU administration will take legal action against him, otherwise
we will go for tough movement,” said Prof Maksud.

DUTA general secretary Prof Dr Shibli Rubaiyat Ul Islam, Dean at Faculty
of Pharmacy SM Abdur Rahman, Sociology Department Prof Abul Kashem Mohammad
Jamal Uddin, among others, spoke at the programme.
