SC upholds stay on bail to BNP leader Aslam Chowdhury

DHAKA, June 20, 2021 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today upheld an order of its Chamber Judge that had stayed a High Court order allowing bail to BNP joint secretary general Mohammad Asalm Chowdhury in two separate cases.

An Appellate Division virtual bench led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order, disposing of leave to appeal pleas filed by the state against the High Court order.

“Disposed of stay,” said the apex court, keeping the stay order to continue on the High Court bail. Attorney General AM Amin Uddin moved the state pleas, while Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal argued for Aslam’s bail.

The High Court on May 30 allowed interim bail to Aslam in the two subversion cases and also issued separate rules. The state filed pleas with the Appellate Division, pleading for staying the order.

Appellate Division Chamber Judge Court on June 6, stayed the High Court order till June 20 and had asked the state side to file leave to appeal petitions. The apex court came up with today’s order after holding a hearing on that leave to appeal pleas.
