Govt. prioritizes expansion of plastic sector: Tipu
DHAKA, June 19,2021 (BSS) – Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi today said the government has been attaching utmost priority for expansion of the plastics sector as an export-oriented product.
He said, the government has formulated export policy giving priority to plastics, leather, agriculture, ICT and pharmaceutical industries to increase the number of export products and Export Competitiveness for Jobs (EC4J).
“The project to this end is being implemented in collaboration with the World Bank to provide necessary technical assistance in those sectors ”.
The minister said this while speaking at an inaugural function of the 15th Bangladesh International Plastics, Printing and Packaging Industry Fair-2021 at a city hotel The fair was organized by the Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BPGMEA) .
Tipu Munshi said that around 90,000 skilled manpower will be generated by 2023 through technology centers, set up under the project of EC4J which will be able to produce quality products to survive in the competitive world market.
Besides, strong efforts are on to sign PTA or FTA agreements with different countries to address the challenges for transition from developing countries.
The plastic industry of Bangladesh is expanding rapidly. Therefore, the government is giving importance to the plastic sector as an export product to meet the challenges for transition from developing countries, he added.
The meeting was informed that the International Plastic Fair (IPF) Online Expo will be held from July 5 to 8. About 483 plastic companies from 19 countries will participate in the Expo.
Visitors will be able to join online and see all the products on display at the fair and learn more about the products through video conference.
Among others, President of Bangladesh Federation of Industries and Merchants Association Md. Jasim Uddin, President of Yorkers Trade and Marketing Service Company Limited and co-organizer of the fair President Judy Wang spoke at the function.
