Enhancing fruit production for nourishment, self-reliance stressed

RANGPUR, July 25, 2018 (BSS) – Discussants at the inaugural ceremony of a
fruit tree fair on Tuesday afternoon laid emphasis on enhancing fruit
production to meet nutritional demand and attain economic self-reliance.

The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and Syedpur upazila
administration have been jointly organising the three-day Fruit Tree Fair-
2018 on Syedpur upazila parishad premises in Nilphamari district.

Chairman of Syedpur upazila parishad Moksedul Momin attended the ceremony
and inaugurated the fair by cutting ribbon as the chief guest.

With Syedpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Bazlur Rashid in the chair,
Upazila Vice-chairmen Azmal Hossain and Rawnak Jahan Rinu and successful
fruit cultivator Rashedunnabi Manik addressed the function as special guests.

Upazila level officials of the DAE, other government departments and NGOs,
nursery owners, students, youths, farmers, local elite and common people were
present.

Different government, non-government departments and organisations and
nursery owners have set up 15 stalls on the fairground displaying many
varieties of fruits and fruit-bear saplings.

In her welcome speech, Syedpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Homayra Mandal
stressed on enhancing production of local, indigenous and high yielding
varieties of fruits side by side with other crops adopting the latest
technologies.

The chief guest asked every citizen for planting saplings of all varieties
of fruit, timber and medicinal plants to also maintain the ecology,
environment, bio-diversity for adapting to climate change to save the country
from natural catastrophes.

“Cultivation of fruits by farmers and commoners on orchards and homesteads
round the year has become a need of the time to meet nutrition and attain
economic self-reliance for building a healthier and developed nation,” he
said.
