Dhaka to be turned into livable modern city: DNCC mayor

DHAKA, June 17, 2021 (BSS) – Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam today said Dhaka would be turned into a livable modern city by freeing it from grabbing and pollution.

He said while presiding over a discussion at Adventist International Mission School at Ibrahimpur under Kafrul police station in the city on the occasion of visiting the voluntary road expansion programme under the initiative of locals.

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam addressed the discussion as the chief guest while State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Mojumder spoke as the special guest.

DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md Selim Reza and local councilors were present among others.

Mayor Atiqul Islam said ward number 13, 14 and 16 under DNCC are very densely populated and were built in an unplanned way. Roads in these wards are so narrow that ambulances cannot enter in emergency period. Even it was very difficult to get dead body out from the residences in the areas, he mentioned.

He said it has been possible to expand the narrow roads with united efforts of all as the general people of the areas have come forward voluntarily realizing the necessity of expanded roads.

The mayor said around 10 kilometer in 27 roads or parts of roads have been expanded while some volunteers or owners of residences have to demolish their valuable establishments partially and leave lands voluntarily for road expansion.

The road expansion programme has been done in ward numbers 13, 14 and 16 under DNCC due to extraordinary strength of the people.

The programme has saved crores of money of the DNCC or the government, he said.

He said it has been a role model and instances for Dhaka city as well as the entire country.

In his speech, LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam extended his thanks to the DNCC mayor for working for the welfare of people during the coronavirus crisis.
