Bangladesh to get one million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine by August: Maleque

DHAKA, June 16, 2021 (BSS) – Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque today said Bangladesh will get one million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine by August this year under COVAX facility.

“Discussion with Russia for purchasing vaccine has made a good progress,” he told a press briefing at his ministry here, an official release said.

Maleque said Bangladesh has signed an agreement with China to buy Covid-19 vaccines. “The agreement was signed with China to purchase Covid-19 vaccines… we expect that China will take all necessary initiative to provide coronavirus vaccine very soon,” he added.

On June 13, the second consignment of six lakh Covid-19 Sinopharm vaccine shots arrived in Bangladesh. The total number of Sinopharm vaccine has stood at 11 lakh, the health minister said adding, “Five lakh people in the country will be vaccinated with first and second doses from these Sinopharm vaccines.”

Bangladesh has so far approved six COVID-19 vaccines for emergency use to control the deadly disease. These vaccines are Johnson & Johnson, “CoronaVac”, manufactured by Sinovac Life Sciences Company Limited, Pfizer mRNA Covid-19 vaccine, Covishield produced by Serum Institute of India; Sputnik V manufactured by Generium Joint Stock Company of Russia; and Sinopharm produced by Beijing Institute of Biological Products Co Ltd of China.
