Traders urge BERC to take their opinion in fixing LPG price

DHAKA, June 15, 2021 (BSS) – Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) operators today urged Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) to consider their opinion for fixing LPG price.

“We demand considering our opinions when the BERC will fix LPG price, as the LPG industry is boosting up during the present government’s tenure,” said president of LPG Operators Association of Bangladesh (LOAB) Azam J Chowdhury.

Addressing a press briefing at Inter-Continental Hotel, he claimed that LPG operators are facing crisis for LPG price fixed by the BERC.

“If the government wants the sector to continue, BERC should offer a realistic price. The government has been supporting private sector to flourish the LPG sector in the country,” Chowdhury said.

“We want to reach our share to 10 percent in the country’s GDP and our investment is Taka 30,000 crore, but the LPG industry is going to be destroyed due to BERC’s one-sided price order,” he added.

On 12 April this year, BERC for the first time fixed the retail price of LPG provided by both public and private operators.

The LOAB president said that fixing the price of the product based on Saudi Aramco’s Contract Price (CP) is correct but some other issues were irrational.

Representatives from Omera LPG, Orion LPG, Bashundhara LPG, Jamuna LPG and JMI LPG were present at the programme.

The retail price of a 12kg LPG cylinder, provided by private gas producers, has been lowered by Tk 64, from Tk 906 to Tk 842, starting in June. The retail price of the state owned producer 12.5-kg LPG cylinder will remain Tk 591 lower than the private sector.
