Covid-19 situation deteriorates further in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, June 14, 2021 (BSS) – The overall coronavirus (Covid-19) situation deteriorated further with an increasing number of deaths amid hastily rising infection rate and declining recovery during the last one week in the division.

Health officials said the infection-related death toll reached 438 in the division as five– four from Dinajpur and one from Thakurgaon districts–more infected patients died during the last 24 hours ending at 8 am today.

“Some 128 patients died from April 10 to June 13, the highest number of deaths in 63 days since the outbreak of the pandemic beginning in the division,” said Focal Person of the COVID-19 and Assistant Director (Health) for Rangpur division Dr. ZA Siddiqui.

The district-wise break-up of the 438 fatalities currently stands at 103 in Rangpur, 158 in Dinajpur, 54 in Thakurgaon, 38 in Nilphamari, 24 in Kurigram, 20 in Panchagarh, 23 in Gaibandha and 18 in Lalmonirhat.

“The average casualty rate now stands at 2.15 percent, which is the highest average fatality rate since the beginning of the pandemic in the division” Dr Siddiqui added.

Talking to BSS, Acting Divisional Director (Health) Dr Abu Md Zakirul Islam said the number of Covid-19 cases hastily rose to 20,408 as 168 more patients were reported positive after testing 579 samples at the infection rate of 29.02 percent on Sunday in the division.

Earlier, the daily infection rates were 27.60 percent on Saturday, 23.98 percent on Friday, 26.04 percent on Thursday, 31.25 percent on Wednesday, 32.03 percent on Tuesday and 28.79 percent on Monday last in the division.

“The district-wise break-up of total 20,408 patients currently stands at 5,243 in Rangpur, 859 in Panchagarh, 1,617 in Nilphamari, 1,195 in Lalmonirhat, 1,331 in Kurigram, 2,006 in Thakurgaon, 6,341 in Dinajpur and 1,816 in Gaibandha,” he said.

A total of 1,39,188 collected samples of all eight districts in the division were tested till Sunday, and of them, 20,408 people were found Covid-19 positive with an average infection rate of 14.66 percent.

Meanwhile, the total number of healed patients rose to 18,415 with the recovery of 90 more infected patients on Sunday in the division where the average recovery rate stands at 90.23 percent.

“The average recovery rate of Covid-19 infected patients was 97.55 percent three months ago on March 9 last in the division where the same dropped by 7.32 percent to 90.23 percent during the last three months,” Dr Islam said.

The 18,415 recovered patients include 4,792 of Rangpur, 819 Panchagarh, 1,541 of Nilphamari, 1,069 of Lalmonirhat, 1,166 of Kurigram, 1,617 of Thakurgaon, 5,665 of Dinajpur and 1,746 of Gaibandha districts.

“Meanwhile, the number of citizens who got the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine remained steady at 5,96,943 since April 26 last, and among them, 3,87,850 got the second dose of the jab till Sunday in the division,” Dr Islam added.

Chief of Divisional Coronavirus Service and Prevention Task Force and Principal of Rangpur Medical College Professor Dr. AKM Nurunnobi Lyzu stressed on abiding by the health directives for containing the rapidly rising Covid-19 infection rate.
