Covid-19: Weeklong lockdown continues strictly in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, June 12, 2021 (BSS) – Weeklong lockdown is continuing strictly for the second consecutive day today in the city aimed at containing the alarming rise of Covid-19 cases.

Local administration in cooperation with the law enforcement agencies has been enforcing the lockdown since 5 pm on Friday last restricting both people and vehicles from appearing on the roads and other public places.

Earlier on Thursday night, the administration had imposed the lockdown from 5 pm of Friday to midnight of June 17 to limit the Covid-19 cases after reviewing the present infection rate.

Abdul Jalil, Deputy Commissioner (DC) and District Magistrate Commissioner of Rajshahi, told BSS that they are rigid to enforce the lockdown strictly to save the people from the virus infection.

Giving an illustration of the lockdown enforcement strategy he said all sorts of shops and marketplaces and vehicular movement will remain closed until June 17.

Vehicles from Chapainawabganj, Natore and Naogaon districts are not allowed to enter Rajshahi. Besides, no vehicles will be allowed to go out from Rajshahi.

However, the restriction on plying of vehicles carrying patients and other emergency goods like medicine and green vegetables and fruits is not applicable, he added.

All sorts of public gatherings, including marriage ceremonies, birthday parties, picnic parties, political meetings and religious meetings remain suspended.

Apart from this, tourists’ spots, resorts, community centres and other amusement places have also been brought under the restriction. Legal action will be taken against those who will be found guilty of violating the restriction, DC Abdul Jalil said.

Meanwhile, huge police force were deployed at all points in the metropolis in addition to patrolling. Four mobile courts are also working to execute the restriction strictly.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abu Kalam Siddique said people are now panicked due to the rising trend of Covid-19 cases in Rajshahi. So, preventive measures have become crucial here.

The lockdown is expected to help limit the spread, he added.

Meanwhile, the Covid-19 cases are showing downward trend for the last couple of days. On Tuesday, a total of 300 people were tested positive, while the figure reduced to 187 on Friday, said Dr Quiume Talukder, Civil Surgeon of Rajshahi.
