Shakib likely to get four-match ban for kicking stumps

DHAKA, June 12, 2021 (BSS)—Bangladesh’s ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is likely to be banned for four matches in the Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier League (DPL) for kicking and later throwing down the stumps in an unprecedented scene in the cricket match.

Mohammedan Sporting Club cricket committee chairman Masuduzzaman said they learnt that the umpires committee has recommended a four-match ban on Shakib.

”We have not got any official letter as of now but we came to know that the umpires committee recommended a four-match ban,” Masuduzzaman told the media today.

He made it sure that they would appeal to the board and request them to dig the matter deep to see why Shakib was prompted to take such a step.

“The incident that happened is not acceptable but why a player like Shakib was prompted to do that, is a matter that should be investigated properly. We will appeal to the board and ask them to dig into the matter.”

Shakib who was leading Mohammedan against their archrivals Abahani Limited lost temper twice on the ground even though his side was in comfortable position, leaving the opponent from a meager 21-3 in reply of Mohammedan 145-6.

When his leg-before wicket appeal against Abahani skipper Mushifuqr Rahim was turned down by umpire Imran Parvez, Shakib furiously went up at the umpires and vented his anger by kicking the stumps.

In the following over, when umpires asked the covers to be brought on with dark clouds hovering around, Shakib lost his cool and uprooted the stumps and then threw it down. Later he fixed the stumps.

Shakib also got into an altercation with Khaled Mahmud Sujon, the Abahani coach who is also the director of the BCB, while moving to the dressing room. However before the situation went out of control, players and officials from both teams calmed them down.

Later, Shakib went to Abahani’s dressing room and resolved the matter before returning to the field when the game resumed.

Shakib also apologized to the fans through a statement on his official Facebook page after the match.

“Dear fans and followers, I am extremely sorry for losing my temper and ruining the match for everyone and especially those who are watching from home. An experienced player like me should not have reacted that way but sometimes against all odds it happens unfortunately,” Shakib wrote.

“I apologise to the teams, management, tournament officials and organizing committee for this human error. Hopefully, I won’t be repeating this again in the future. Thanks and love you all,” he added.

Earlier Shakib got away with a simple warning despite breaching the bio-Secure environment during the ongoing DPL as he decided to call two additional net bowlers from his own cricket academy during his individual training session at the BCB indoor training facility.

It was not the first time that Shakib got into trouble. He was suspended by BCB for six months in 2014 for attitude problems that included a lewd gesture on TV, beating a spectator in the stadium, and travelling to the Caribbean Premier League without a clearance.

Shakib was banned by the International Cricket Council for two years in 2019, with one year of that suspended, due to his failure to report corrupt approaches from bookies. He only came back to national duty earlier this year with the series against West Indies.
