Syria-return suspected militant held in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, June 12, 2021 (BSS) – Members if the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Chattogram Metropolitan Police arrested a Syria-return suspected militant on charges of involvement with the banned militant group Ansar al-Islam from city’s Khulshi area on Friday.

The arrested was identified as Shakhawat Ali alias Lalu, 40, son of Shamser Ali and also an IT specialist of Ansar al-Islam hailed from Shamser Ali Bari at WASA crossing in the city.

CTTC members recovered a book, a passport, tabs, mobile phones and laptop from his possession.

“Lalu went to Syria from Bangladesh four years ago. He has returned to the country in March last,” police sources said.
Sub-inspector (SI) of CTTC Rashib Khan filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act against the militant.

According to CTTC sources, Sakhawat Ali Lalu became involved in the militant activities of the banned organisation Ansar al-Islam through his relative Arif Mamun in 2012.

Lalu confessed before the law enforcers about his involvement with Ansar al-Islam. He was arrested following a raid on his arrival in Chattogram from Syria.

During the interrogation, some information was obtained from him, the SI added.
