Abahani back at top, Mohammedan keep losing at DPL

DHAKA, June 10, 2021 (BSS)—The sixth round of the Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier League (DPL) saw defending champions Abahani’s return to the top spot while their archrivals Mohammedan continued to hit low ebb.

Today’s round at different venues across the city saw the victory of Prime Bank Cricket Club, Khelaghar Samaj Kallayan Samity, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, Legends of Rupganj and Gazi Group Cricketers. On the other hand, Prime Doleshwar experienced the first defeat in the season to concede the top spot.

Abahani vs Shinepukr

Defending champions Abahani Limited regained the top position of the Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier League (DPL) after securing a 25-run win over Shinepukur Cricket Club by DLS system at BKSP-4 ground today.

Opener Naim Sheikh led the victory, hitting a match defining 50 ball-70 that included four fours and as many sixes. Alongside him, Afif Hossain, who opened the innings with Naim, blasted a 54 off 42 as Abahani compiled a hefty 183-5 in 20 overs.

Mohammedan vs Legends of Rupganj

Country’s powerhouse Mohammedan Sporting Club’s woe in the league continued as they tasted a third straight defeat by conceding a nine-wicket loss to Legends of Rupganj at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

After tasting defeat to Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club and Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club in the last two matches, Mohammedan came into the game with an intention to hit back in the winning way.

But instead, they were restricted to a paltry 113-9 in 20 overs, a score that Rupganj overhauled effortlessly, making 119-1 in 18.1 overs.

Mohammedan’s situation could have worsened more had Shuvagata Hom not resisted. Coming into bat at No. 7 position, he blasted 52 off 32 with one four and five sixes to help the side go past 100 runs mark.

It indeed looked unlikely when Mohammedan were reduced to 27-6 in 10th over including losing the wicket of captain Shakib Al Hasan for 0. That raised their prospect of being all out for the lowest total in Bangladesh’s T20 cricket history. However, thanks to Shuvagata, they avoided that shameful record.

Prime Bank vs Prime Doleshwar

Prime Bank Cricket Club handed Prime Doleshwar a narrow- three-run defeat in the sixth round game at BKSP-3 ground.

This was Doleshwar’s first defeat in the season which cost them the top spot they occupied till the last round.

Electing to bat first, Prime Bank compiled 151-7 and later thanks to Mustafizur Rahman’s economical bowling effort, they kept Doleshwar four runs away from the victory, restricting them to 148-9.

Mohammad Mithun however continued his good batting form to help Prime Bank recover from early wobble that saw them being reduced to 19-2, losing inform Rony Talukdar and Tamim Iqbal.

Mithun scored 55 off 50 with five fours and one six to help the side stabilize the things. Captain Anamul Haque Bijoy gave him the apt support with 18 ball-29 while Alok Kapali provided the pace towards the death with 14 ball-26.

Pacer Kamrul Islam Rabbi took 2-22 for Prime Doleshwar before hitting a 12 ball-38 not out at No. 10 position. Kamrul’s knock brought Doleshwar agonizingly close to the victory but they eventually fell short.

Khelghar vs Brothers

Khelaghar Samaj Kallayan Samity secured their third victory, beating Brothers Union by five runs through the DLS system at BKSP-3 ground.

Electing to bat first, Brothers posted 134-5, largely thanks to opener Mizanur Rahman who hit 66 off 61 with four fours and two sixes.

Khelghar reached 109-3 in 16.2 overs after which rain arrived to force the postponement of the game. At that phase, as per the DLS calculation, Khelaghar’s winning-target stood 105. Since they were 109 at that stage, it meant they were ahead of five runs as per DLS during 16.2 overs.

Partex vs Sheikh Jamal

Partex Sporting Club kept the losing trend as they conceded their sixth defeat in a row after tasting a six-wicket drubbing to Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club at BKSP-4 ground.

After being sent to bat first, Partex felt the wrath of left arm pacer Salahuddin Shakil who grabbed 5-16 to bowl them out for 104 in 19.3 overs.

Sheikh Jamal gunned down the target in 17.2 overs with 105-4. Captain Nurul Hasan Sohan led the victory, hitting 30 while Elias Sunny was not out on 27.
