SSNPs effectively cutting poverty: public representatives

RANGPUR, July 24, 2018 (BSS) – Public representatives at a function have
said the massive social safety-net programmes (SSNPs) are effectively cutting
poverty improving livelihoods and life standard of the poor and distressed
people.

They made the observation at the function arranged by Sadar Upazila Social
Service Office at Sadar upazila parisahd hall room on Monday afternoon to
distribute allowance cards to 835 beneficiaries of SSNPs of Haridebpur union.

Using the cards, the beneficiaries, including 486 elderly citizens, 145
widows and 204 disabled people, would get a total of over Taka 62.56-lakh as
allowances from Paglapeer branch of Janata Bank Limited for the 2016-2017
fiscal.

Sadar Upazila Chairman Nasima Zaman Boby attended the function and
distributed the allowance cards as the chief guest with Sadar Upazila Social
Service Officer Shikha Rani Roy in the chair.

Chairman of nearby Chandanpat union parisahd Aminur Rahman, Chairman Iqbal
Hossain of Haridebpur union parisahd and its Female Member from reserved ward
Bharoti Rani Roy, addressed as special guests.

Chairman Iqbal Hossain said the SSNPs already proved to be effective to
assist the poor in leading normal life by winning over poverty to improve
their livelihoods and economic conditions during the past ten years.

Chairman Aminur Rahman said the rural poor lived in utter miseries,
especially during the seasonal lean period in ‘Aswin’ and ‘Kartik’ months
even a decade ago. But, the successful implementation of massive SSNPs
already ended their sufferings.

The chief guest termed Awami League as a political party for helpless people
and said fortune of the destitute, poor and have-nots group people always
improved following huge development whenever the party remained in power.

“The government is implementing SSNPs as priority initiatives of Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina to ensure social security of poor, backward and
underprivileged people to attain the sustainable development goals in
building a poverty-free country,” she said.
