Momen greets Maldivian FM for being elected UNGA president

DHAKA, June 8, 2021 (BSS) – Foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen today greeted his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Shahid for his win as the President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

“We (Bangladesh) gave all out support to him (Shahid). It’s a good news as he was elected,” the minister told media at his office here today.

Bangladesh has also been elected as Vice President for the 76th Session of UNGA from the Asia Pacific Region for one year term beginning from September next.

The election was held at the UNGA in New York on Monday where Bangladesh was elected unanimously.

About Bangladesh being elected as Vice-president, the foreign minister said it would help Dhaka to place some of its ideas to the UNGA.

Along with Bangladesh, Kuwait, Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the Philippines have been elected as Vice Presidents from the Asia Pacific Region.

Momen said he is scheduled to visit New York on the second week of this month to attend a General Assembly Plenary on Rohingya issue.

He said Dhaka sought 20 lakh doses of AstraZeneca vaccine from the USA immediately, while Bangladesh needs at least 15 lakh doses of this vaccine.

The foreign minister expressed his optimism to get the much-needed AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine from the US.
