DHAKA, June 08, 2021 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today rejected a writ petition challenging the legality of declaring the Lakshmipur-2 constituency vacant and the schedule for holding by-election to this constituency.

A High Court Division virtual bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah passed the order, summarily scrapping the plea filed by former lawmaker of that constituency Mohammad Shahid Islam Papul’s sister Nurunnahar Begum and one inhabitant of the area Shahadat Hossain.

Senior lawyer Barrister Rokon Uddin Mahmud and Mustafizur Rahman Khan moved the plea before the court, while Deputy Attorney General Nowroj Md Russel Chowdhury stood for the state.

Earlier on February 22, the Parliament Secretariat declared the Lakshmipur-2 constituency vacant as the disgraced lawmaker was convicted and sentenced by a Kuwait court for human trafficking and money laundering.

The Election Commission (EC) on March 4 announced the schedule to hold by-election to that constituency. After postponing the date of the election for the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, now the EC has decided to hold the election on June 21.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on November 11, 2020, filed a case against Papul, his wife Selina Islam, MP, daughter Wafa Islam and sister-in-law Jesmin Prodhan for amassing illegal worth of Taka 2.31 crore and laundering abroad Taka 148 crore.
