Hefajat announces 33-member new committee

DHAKA, June 7, 2021 (BSS) – Hefajat-e-Islam has declared a 33-member new central committee with Junayed Babunagari and Nurul Islam Jihadi as amir and secretary general.

Nurul Islam Jihadi announced the committee today at a press conference at the secretary general’s office in the city’s Khilgaon area.

Founder amir of Hefajat-e-Islam late Allama Ahmad Shafi’s elder son Yousuf Madani has been made assistant secretary general.

However, Mamunul Haque and all other leaders, who were office bearers in the last committee and are now in jail for their alleged involvement in carrying out March mayhem protesting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh, have been dropped from the new committee.

Earlier, Junayed Babunagari on April 25 in a video message dissolved the central committee of the Qawmi madrasah-based Hefajat-e-Islam. But, after several hours, a five-member convening committee of Hefajat-e-Islam was announced with Babunagari and Jihadi as its convener and member-secretary.

The Hefajat-e-Islam was held responsible for carrying out mayhem across the country from March 25 to 28 during the state visit of the Indian prime minister to Bangladesh marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the country’s golden jubilee of independence.
