Conserving water resource for boosting fish output stressed

RAJSHAHI, July 24, 2018 (BSS)-Fisheries experts and researchers here underscored the need for enhancing fish farming through the best use of existing natural resources.

It will enhance fish production and thus fill up the national protein deficiency and also alleviate poverty through employment generation.

They made the observations while releasing fish fingerlings in a research pond in Rajshahi University (RU) campus on Monday. Department of Fisheries of RU organised the event to mark the National Fisheries Week-2018.

On the occasion, 300 kg of native fish species like rui, katla and mrigel were released.

RU Vice-chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan, Pro-VC Prof Ananda Kumar Shaha and Prof Shaleha Jesmin, Prof Afzal Hossain and Prof Delwar Hossain of the department addressed the ceremony.

Prof Sobhan put emphasis on formulation of tough law against abuse of ponds and other natural water bodies since the aquatic biodiversity and fish production of the area have been facing setback gradually due to various manmade and natural reasons.

He recommended for time-befitting policy for freeing the water resources from all sorts of pollution and contamination so that the indigenous fish species could be saved from extinction.

Besides, through inspiring farmers, providing them with latest scientific technologies and educating them in producing quality fish fries and fingerlings, fruitful results can be achieved.

Prof Ananda Kumar said the reduced water flow in the internal river basins has resulted in a severe depletion of fisheries. He put emphasis on fish habitat restoration, establishment of fish sanctuaries, fish pass, stock enhancement in floodplain and creating social awareness for proper rehabilitation of the fisheries sector.

He hoped that the fish production would enhance significantly through adoption of modern technologies in pisciculture.
