Soon Bangladesh will be food surplus country – Sadhan

DHAKA, June 6, 2021, (BSS) – Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder today said that Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficiency in food production under the strong leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and soon it will become a food surplus country.

“Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had taken up plans for the development of agriculture with food security in mind. The present government under the leadership of his worthy successor PM Hasina is working towards building a hunger-free, self-reliant and prosperous Bangladesh,” Sadhan said.

He made the remarks while addressing a seminar titled ‘Second National Level Dialogue’ in preparation for the UN Food System Summit 2021 from his office room at the Secretariat today.

“Food security has already been ensured, now ensuring safe and nutritious food is one of the priority programs of the Ministry of Food,” he added.

The minister also said that , “Various initiatives have been taken to ensure food supply and nutrition to the growing population of the country. National Food and Nutrition Policy 2020 is being formulated and Second National Nutrition Plan is being implemented.”

The food minister said integrated programs have been taken with more emphasis on food and nutrition.

Secretary of the Ministry of Food Dr. Mosammat Nazmanara Khanum presided over the function. Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Md. Mesbahul Islam, Former Secretary Zakir Hossain Akand and Country Representative of UN Food and Agriculture Salimul Haque also spoke.

Senior officials from various ministries, representatives of development partners and media representatives were virtually involved at the time.
