Govt working tirelessly to tackle disasters caused by climate change: Shahab Uddin

DHAKA, June 2, 2021 (BSS) – Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin today said the government is working relentlessly to tackle the disasters caused by the adverse impacts of global climate-change.

“The government has updated the ‘Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan’ to adapt to climate change and set up a ‘Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Fund’ with its own funding and various government and non-government projects are being implemented in the country with the funding of the fund,” he said.

The minister said this while virtually addressing a national dialogue titled ‘Climate Change and Risk of Disaster on the South-West Coast’ organized by the Sundarbans and Coastal Protection Movement this evening as the chief guest.

Besides, the government has also made a ‘National Adaptation Plan Implementation Roadmap’, he said. The minister also said that 2.55 million US dollars has been received from the Green Climate Fund for the National Adaptation Plan Process Formulation and the implementation work of the project has already been started.

The project will also play a role in resolving the existing situation in the south-west coast, he said, adding that the government has formulated ‘Standing Orders on Disasters’, 2019, to deal with natural disasters also.

He urged all individuals and non-governmental organizations to come forward to improve the living standards of the affected people in coastal areas .

Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Hoque Shameem was present as the special guest with Sundarbans and Coastal Protection Movement coordinator Nikhil Chandra Bhadra in the chair.

Former Health Minister AFM Ruhul Haque MP, Lawmaker Akhtaruzzaman Babu of Khulna 6 constituency and Lawmaker (reserved women’s seat) Advocate Gloria Jharna Sarkar also spoke, among others.
