Dhaka seeks UK support in transferring clean energy technology

DHAKA, June 2, 2021 (BSS) – COP 26 President-designate Alok Sharma today said UK is ready to support Dhaka in its transaction to clean energy while he called on rich countries to fulfil their pledge of forming annual 100 billion US dollar climate fund to support vulnerable countries like Bangladesh.

“I have urged the rich countries to fulfil their pledges to create the 100 billion US dollar annual climate fund,” he said in a joint press briefing with foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen at foreign service academy here.

The COP president also urged all countries to fulfill their commitments to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degree.
Before the briefing, Sharma held a meeting with the Bangladesh foreign minister and attend a UK- Bangladesh Climate Partnership Roundtable.

Dr Momen said he urged the UK to transfer technologies of green energy to Bangladesh as Dhaka has the plan to scale down its power production from coal.

He said Bangladesh has the plan to produce its 40 percent of power from the renewable sources and to materialize that Dhaka is looking for technology of more solar and wind power.

The foreign minister said Bangladesh sought support from the developed countries to provide assistance in building high and wide embankment with solar and wind power facilities along with its entire coastal belt.

Alok Sharma, also a British MP arrived here on a two-day visit to strengthen support for UK COP26 climate priorities ahead of hosting the crucial UN climate change summit in Glasgow this November.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam received him at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport this morning.

In the morning, Sharma called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and discussed how the UK’s COP Presidency will work with the climate vulnerable countries.

On Thursday, Alok Sharma is schedule to visit the Sundarbans.

Sharma’s visit is focus on climate ambition, including a clean energy transition and efforts to help communities deal with the worst effects of climate change.

During his visit, he is pressing his personal priority for a move to global clean power, critical to limiting global temperature rise to 1.5C, said a statement of the UK Cabinet Office.
