Mahmudullah, Mominul delivery Gazi Group victory in DPL
DHAKA, June 2, 2021 (BSS)—Gazi Group today registered their first victory in the Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier League (DPL), crushing Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club by seven wickets at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Captain Mahmudullah Riyad and Mominul Haque played the key role in the victory, hitting half-century each.
The star-studded Gazi Group conceded a seven-wicket defeat in their first match against Prime Bank Cricket Club but produced a stellar show in their second game to bounce back into the winning way.
Captain Mahmudullah, also the skipper of Bangladesh’s T20 format led from the front with 51 ball-62 not out, hitting four fours and two sixes. He was ably supported by Test captain Mominul Haque who blasted 54 off 36, clattering eight fours.
After Sheikh Jamal posted 151-7, Gazi overhauled the target, courtesy to the duo, with 156-3 in 18.5 overs.
The Test and T20 captain shared 97-run for the third wicket stand to take the side on the verge of the victory after they were reduced to 40-2 with both openers Shahadat Hossain Dipu and Soumya Sarkar, falling to identical 13 runs.
Zakir Hasan later accompanied his captain to see off the target, remaining unbeaten on 10.
For Jamal, Mohammad Ashraful was the top-scorer with 41 off 35, clobbering four sixes. His opening partner Shykat Ali hit 33 as they added 69 runs in 49 balls for the opening stand. But the Gazi bowlers hit back nicely to stall the progress of the Jamal and resisted them from making it big.
Before contributing with batting, captain Mahmudullah also bowled well, claiming 2-23. Pacer Mukidul Islam Mugdho also took 2-36.
This was Jamal’s first defeat after their 22-run victory over Khelaghar Samaj Kallyan Samity in the first match.
